Mila & Rex’s 4.17.22 Litter

Adoption Day!

Every adoption day we ask ourselves, “How can this one be as great as the others?” Yet, it keeps happening. With such wonderful families, it’s easy to put our puppies in their arms and feel comfortable that our little fur balls will be well taken care of and live very special ever afters. Thank you so much families!

Ever After has been working on some finishing touches. Social time with friends of all ages, car rides, thunderstorms, lawn mower, you name it are being checked off of the list. It was fun treating folks to squeezably soft puppy bodies while simultaneously getting the seven socialized. Thank you to our dear friends for your help! Crate training is on schedule; but although this group is willing to do as asked, they still prefer sibling snuggles. Honestly, Ever After loves to join in on the group snuggle fest too.

Visitation week was a success. The puppies turned on the charm as instructed. The week also brought each puppy’s first full bath. The rule of thumb for bathing is only when needed (they needed it) and only with a gentle dog shampoo (NOT a gentle human baby shampoo). Another first - puppies started sleeping their daytime naps in individual crates. Overall they still prefer piling on top of each other, so we go at their pace with the crate training. The seven are great eaters. However, a few need reminding of their proper portion sizes;)

The puppies have kept their two large kennels completely dry as they leave their beds for potty time on litter trays. Thus, they are now ready for the next step. Also, the little tykes are making the transition from soft kibbles to hard kibbles with those sharp teeth coming in quite nicely. Outside time is their favorite. They show no fear as yardwork is done around their courtyard area. If the pups had it their way, they would have preferred that the grass had never been cut.

This was graduation week for members of Ever After as well as Mila’s puppies - busy, busy. The pups graduated from puppy nursery to puppy kindergarten with their own room for snuggle-buggle time as well as their own indoor and outdoor play areas. They are learning “come” to run outside for nursing with Mom. Then they pee/poo/play until the next nap. Their play areas provide lots of stimulation with different noises and textures to absorb. Kennel training is going well. At this point, two large crates are being used. The kennel doors remain open to litter tray areas until the puppies can “hold it” a bit longer. Hippity hip hooray to our 2022 graduates!

Porridge week is always entertaining (as well as messy). Although the puppies are “eating” three porridge meals a day and dabbling with (or should we say swimming in) water, Mother’s milk is by far the crowd favorite still. Their walks are getting steadier, voices are trying out baby barking, and they are finding their siblings to be the best gnaw toys ever. Each puppy receives weekly nail clippings with a human clippers due to their itty-bitty size. (Please see the video on the RESOURCES page showing how to clip your dog’s nails properly to avoid cutting any nerves - ouch!) The puppies also received a mini trim around their eyes and private parts this week - something you will need to do between professional groomings. How often will they need to see a groomer? Owners typically schedule appointments about every 4-9 weeks. It depends on how good you are at keeping up with the brushing, nails, hair removal in ears, and mini-trimmings in-between appointments.

This week, open ears could hear the nursery music while wobbly legs attempted to dance along. Ever After’s Instagram shows a video of your pups doing the red-carpet walk (super cute). This loving bunch crowds around for both mommy and Ever After family members. It’s our pleasure to snuggle the entire bunch on your behalf. Their whelping box now has one side for sleeping and the other side for litter box training. We're counting on quick learners from these cuties.

Although their eyesight will continue to develop over the next few weeks, the opening of the eyes is always so spectacular. (Peter is pictured peeking over his pile of live pillow pets.) When Mom is out of the whelping box, the seven enjoy snuggling with Ever After family members - and visa versa. We place the puppies at the base of our necks and readily enjoy their puppy grunts, bunny soft fur, and plump yet tiny little bodies as they nestle up for their next nap. With ears just beginning to open, it won’t be long before they hear the songs we sing to them. Your puppies are being well loved.

Being an Easter litter, Ever After named your sweet ones after Beatrix Potter’s story characters in her famous children’s book Peter Rabbit. With the puppies having coats like soft, yummy, bunny fur, the idea wasn’t so far fetched. Even with eyes and ears closed, the puppies still find mommy’s milk bar by smell and touch as they scoot around on their plump little tummies. Until the puppies can regulate their own body heat, Mila keeps them close or nudges them over to the warming pad area. She truly is an amazing mother. Paw pads and noses are starting to darken from their bunny pink color. At this point, the puppies have three jobs - nurse, squeak, and sleep - and they do them all quite well.

Mila had an Easter morning delivery of 7 healthy puppies - 4 boys and 3 girls (pink, lilac, and yellow). Ever After’s Lorelei was excited to be home from college to join in the whelping.
