Penny & Miso 9.2.25 Halloween Litter - Week 2

If you’ve read Past Litter posts, week two always highlights the eye openings. It’s something we can’t wait for - who will be the first - how many days before all are open?? It’s an exciting milestone. However, eyes open does not mean the pups can see well yet. Their sight will continue to develop over the upcoming weeks. Equally as exciting, puppies are now doing a hybrid dance of scooting combined with wobbly legs. No playing yet - it’s still a time of nursing, stretching, and sleeping. From the pictures, you can see that positions at the milk bar and napping piles do not take into account size of puppies. It’s “one for all and all for one!” Typically, puppy piles seem to be for security and keeping warm. This litter prefers a pile over the warmed area of the whelping box - so sweet. During social time, we love to hold the puppies under our chins while we hum the classical music melodies playing in their nursery. They are incredibly YUMMY! The color changes you see in their bunny soft coats is due to different lighting in the room.

Here we have the first portraits of our apricot-colored litter! We like to refer to the muted apricot/caramels as “champagne.” It’s not a color we get often but is always a fun treat. We’ll see if the puppies get frosted tips which occasionally happens with the solid coats. Would you believe that we have people waiting in line to assign litter theme names? This is a fun one for puppies who will be ready for homes Halloween weekend. I remember The Addams Family and The Munsters television shows from my youth; so having a young person bring them up for the theme was pretty fun. Also listed with each puppy is their birth weight. Ideally, puppies should double their weight in the first week - they did! Warning: Birth weights don’t necessarily depict adult size nor if certain puppies will be larger/smaller than their siblings. At seven weeks old, we have a better guesstimate for adult size. The first two weeks, puppies most definitely need their moms. Penny instinctually knows to nudge/lick/sniff each puppy when she enters the whelping box encouraging them to find the milk bar by sense of smell. You see, newborn puppies are blind, deaf, unable to walk (they tummy scoot), unable to control body temperature, and unable to defecate and pee on their own. Penny helps with all of this. She keeps her puppies close for warmth or will even nudge them over to the area of the whelping box where a heating pad has been positioned. She licks them to stimulate waste removal and keeps the entire area clean. Penny spends the vast majority of each 24-hour day close to her puppies while only taking breaks for eating, drinking, potty breaks, and quick “hello’s” for our family. The entire process is absolutely miraculous. However, Penny gets the credit for being an exceptional mother.

Happy Birthday!

Penny gave new meaning to the Labor Day holiday. Three hours after arriving at our home with her guardian family, she decided an early delivery was in order. Labor started Monday at 8:00 P.M., and the last of seven puppies (5 girls, 2 boys) arrived on Tuesday at 12:30 A.M. As with her first litter, Penny handled the entire process with such grace - a natural. This litter is the dream: born quickly with placentas, healthy, immediate & strong nursers, great variety-pack sizes, cool “champagne” coloring, and raised by a tender & experienced mama. The first week is all about caring for Mom’s needs and making sure puppies get on the milk bar for consistent daily weight gains. Penny barely takes potty/food/water breaks as any time away from the puppies is difficult for her right now. We absolutely adore Penny and these little ones! Stay tuned for the litter’s theme names;)
